SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday named Jammu & Kashmir medium-pacer Umran Malik as a “short-term Covid-19 replacement” for T Natarajan, who recently tested positive for Covid-19. Malik travelled with the SRH squad to the UAE as a net bowler.
T Natarajan, who was found to be asymptomatic, had to undergo isolation along with Vijay Shankar and five other members including Vijay Kumar – Team Manager, Shyam Sundar J – Physiotherapist, Anjana Vannan – Doctor, Tushar Khedkar – Logistics Manager, Periyasamy Ganesan – Net Bowler, who were deemed close contacts of Natarajan after he tested positive for the virus on Wednesday (September 22), the same day of the match of SRH against Delhi Capitals. Since the other members returned a negative result of the RT-PCR test, the match was allowed to ahead ahead.
“Under Regulation 6.1 (c), franchisees are allowed to sign a short-term replacement player until the original squad member is permitted to re-enter the team’s bio-secure environment. Hence, Malik will only be a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad side until Natarajan recovers and is allowed to join the team,” the IPL media release stated.
Urman Malik has played one T20 and one List A match for Jammu Kashmir so far and has picked a total of four wickets. He clinched three wickets conceding 24 runs for Jammu & Kashmir in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Railways in January earlier this year. His List A appearance came in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Bengal, where he conceded 98 runs from his ten overs for one wicket for his team Jammu and Kashmir.
SRH has been facing setbacks ever since the resumption of the IPL 2021 in the UAE. Earlier their all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford left the bio-bubble amid the ongoing IPL 2021 to return to his family after the demise of his father.
