Sri Lankan team wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera has been ruled out of the six-match limited-overs series of Sri Lanka versus India starting July 18.
Kusal Perera has been ruled out of both the ODIs and T20Is against India due to a shoulder injury. Sri Lanka Cricket informed on Friday.
“Kusal Janith Perera will not be able to take part in the ODI and the T20I series against India owing to an injury. The Wicket-Keeper Batsman suffered a right shoulder sprain during training,” Sri Lanka Cricket revealed in an official media release.
Perera picked up a shoulder injury during Sri Lanka’s tour of England. However, he kept playing in the series because of the non-availability of replacements.
Perera’s absence will be a major blow for the team as he is currently the most experienced player in the squad. He has represented Sri Lanka in 22 Tests, 107 ODIs, and 50 T20I. He has been in decent form, having scored 54 runs in the T20 series against England before notching 73 runs off of 81 deliveries in the first ODI.
This comes as a huge blow for the Sri Lankan team as his absence means the team will be without their first-choice wicket-keeper. Their second option Niroshan Dickwella is also out of contention after facing a ban due to the bio-bubble breach.
Perera is a former captain of the Sri Lankan team in England. However, since the central contract dispute between players and the cricket board, Dasun Shanaka has been appointed captain in his place.
Furthermore, adding to the worries of the team, fast Bowler Binura Fernando has also been sidelined after spraining his left ankle during a practice session held on Thursday. Consequently, he will be unavailable for the ODI series of the India Tour of Sri Lanka.
