After being dropped from the India Test squad and a disappointing Ranji Trophy campaign, Chesteshwar Pujara seems to have rediscovered his mojo on the 22-yard line while playing for Sussex in the whole County Championship season.
While the Gujarat cricketer has been steady during the current County season, batting icon Sunil Gavaskar isn’t convinced, claiming that there is a significant difference between County and Test bowling assaults. Simultaneously, the 1983 World Cup winner believes that Cheteshwar Pujara may return to the Indian red-ball team.
Sunil Gavaskar explained why the number three batter should be in India’s playing XI, saying that the senior cricketer has the potential to tire out the bowler as well as hold one end solidly when the occasion requires it. In addition, he stated that Pujara’s strike rate in County cricket is good.
Cheteshwar Pujara has 717 runs at 143.40 with a strike rate of 61.22 in the present County Championship, including two double centuries. Even Mohd Rizwan was all praises for veteran Pujara after looking at his performance.
New Zealand played two Test matches in England before the World Test Championship final last year. As a result, they became accustomed to the conditions there, and when they encountered similar conditions in Southampton for the WTC final, they were prepared.
“It was pouring outside. They had become accustomed to the situation. Cheteshwar Pujara is going through this. He’s gotten used to batting against English bowlers in English conditions. Yes, there is a significant difference between a County and a Test bowling attack, but when a batter is in form, why not consider him?” Gavaskar said.
