Indian cricketer Suresh Raina backed Virat Kohli and stated that he should be given a bit more time. Raina emphasised that Virat Kohli has been the best batsman in the world for quite some time. However, he also made a dig at him, saying that Kohli’s is yet to win an IPL title.
The World Test Championship defeat for India at the hands of New Zealand once again reignited the debate on the split captaincy in India. While some believe that Virat Kohli should step down from limited over’s captaincy and hand it over to Rohit Sharma, others said that he should continue leading the side in all departments.
“You’re talking about an ICC trophy but he hasn’t even won an IPL yet. I feel that he needs to be given some time. There are 2-3 World Cups taking place one after the other – two T20 World Cups and then the 50-over World Cup. It’s not easy to reach the final – sometimes you miss out on a few things. I think he has been the No 1 captain and batsman in the world. His record proves that he has achieved a lot,” Raina told News24 Sports.
The Indian Cricket Team recently suffered defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the WTC final by 8 wickets. Raina believes that India’s underwhelming performance with the bat was the major reason behind the defeat and not the English conditions.
“The WTC final was one such example. People said it was because of the conditions but I feel there was something lacking in batting. The bigger batsmen will have to stitch partnerships and take responsibilities,” he added.
Suresh Raina will be seen plying his trade for CSK once IPL 2021 resumes in September in Dubai.
