Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina and former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star remained unsold during the IPL 2022 mega auction in February. Neither the CSK, his old franchise, nor the new franchise Lucknow representing UP, also his home state showed interest in acquiring him. As per the Insidesport, the southpaw has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to let him play in the overseas T20 leagues such as Big Bash League (BBL) or Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
And as per the guidelines outlined by the BCCI, male cricketers who are currently active, irrespective of being retired or not, are not allowed to play in overseas tournaments.
“I hope the BCCI can get together with the ICC or with franchises and allow players who don’t have BCCI contracts to play in overseas leagues,” Suresh Raina was earlier quoted as saying in a report on cricket.com.au last year.
Raina was listed at a base price of INR 2 crores but remained unsold on both the days of the auction owing to his form which has been a concern for quite a while. He did not play in IPL 2020 and played 12 matches and only scored 160 runs at an average of 17.77 in IPL 2021.
Another player and former India Under-19 captain Unmukt Chand had last year participated in the Big Bash League (BBL) and Major League Cricket (MLC), a USA-based tournament after retiring from the BCCI.
“These last few years have been tough. But I wasn’t going to give up on cricket completely. If I wasn’t getting enough opportunities to play in India, where were the next four or five crucial years of my career going to go? I still get emotional imagining that I will never get to play for India again. But I have made some special memories while playing in India.”
Yuvraj Singh could only play in the Global T20 League in Canada following his national team retirement and from IPL after seeking permission from the BCCI. Others who played in the overseas tournaments are Irrfan Pathan & Munaf Patel. both of them played in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). While former Rajasthan Royals player Pravin Tambe became the first Indian player to play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) for Trinbago Knight Riders, and also in Abu Dhabi T10 League.
