The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 is all set to start on 17th October 2021. The high-octane T20 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan is scheduled to be played on 24th October 2021, a source confirmed the date to ANI on Wednesday.
The two groups for the perennial tournament was announced by BCCI last month. Both India and Pakistan are placed in Group 2. The T20 World Cup 2021 will be played from 17th October and 14th November 2021.
Defending champions West Indies have been placed in Group 1, along with the likes of England, Australia and South Africa. Group 1 will also have two qualifying teams from Round 1.
Group 2 consists of India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Afghanistan and two other qualifiers from Round 2. The teams are divided into two groups based on team rankings as of March 20, 2021.
Eight teams will contest the first round including automatic qualifiers Sri Lanka and Bangladesh with the remaining six who booked their spot through the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019.
Here are the two groups competing in the first round of the ICC T20 World Cup:
Group A: Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Namibia
Group B: Bangladesh, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, Oman
Ireland, Netherlands, and Namibia join Sri Lanka in Group A, whilst Oman, PNG, and Scotland will face Bangladesh in Group B.
Earlier, the T20 World Cup 2021 was scheduled to be held in India. However, the fear of the third wave of Covid-10 led the event to be moved to UAE. The tournament will now be jointly staged in UAE and Oman. The hosting rights, however, will remain with BCCI.
