The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced that Shardul Thakur has been added to the India team squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as replacement for Axar Patel. Patel, on the other hand, has been included in the list of the stand-by players for the squad alongside Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar.
The decision is the outcome of the discussion between the All-India Senior Selection Committee and the team management. It is being assumed that the step has been taken due to the looming uncertainty over the participation of Hardik Pandya, who hasn’t been bowling for quite sometime now.
Thakur has had an impressive stint in the ongoing IPL 2021 and has been a key figure in the success of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which is the first team to make it into the Final. He picked up 13 wickets in the UAE leg of the tournament, which resumed with CSK’s clash with the Mumbai Indians on September 19. His is the joint third in the UAE leg. He has aggregated 18 wickets (highest for the franchise) from 15 games at an economy of 8.75 so far this season.
