The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Wednesday that the Turkey cricket team has pulled out of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier as the Turkish Sports Ministry failed to acquire the necessary approval and travel documentation required due to COVID-19 restrictions for the team. This was supposed to be Turkey’s debut in the Women’s Twenty20 international event.
The Europe Qualifier commences tomorrow in La Manga, Spain. The game will now see a five-team contest after the omission of Turkey. The ICC has released a revised schedule for the tournament.
ICC Regional Development Manager Europe, Andy Wright said: “It is with great regret that Turkey will not be taking part in the Europe Qualifier at La Manga. We have been in communication with the Federation over the past month to provide any assistance to secure their arrival into Spain in time for the event and would like to thank the Federation for their efforts in trying to secure the documentation.
“We have worked closely with the remaining participating teams and the event will now be played as a five-team tournament. We are looking forward to seeing play getting underway tomorrow in what is still set to be a very competitive event.”
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier will run from August 26 to August 30, all the matches of which will be live-streamed on ICC.tv and FanCode. The top team of the tournament will progress to the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier 2022.
