After the Event Panel of the ICC U-19 World Cup concluded that Zimbabwe’s Victor Chirwa uses improper bowling action for which he has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect.
On Saturday, January 16, the spinner was reported following the team’s tournament opener versus Papua New Guinea. The event panel ruled that Chirwa’s bowling motion was improper, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC).
“Zimbabwe’s Victor Chirwa has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after the Event Panel of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup confirmed that he uses an illegal bowling action. The Event Panel comprised members of the ICC Panel of Human Movement Specialists,” the ICC said in an official statement.
“Chirwa was reported by the match officials during Zimbabwe’s match against Papua New Guinea on Saturday. Video footage of him bowling in the event was shared with the Event Panel for review. The Event Panel concluded that Chirwa employed an illegal bowling action and, as such, in accordance with Article 6.7 of the regulations, he is immediately suspended from bowling in international cricket,” the statement said further.
Chirwa completed with statistics of 7-3-11-2 in Zimbabwe’s first game, which they won by 228 runs. They were defeated by Pakistan by 115 runs in the second match, with the spinner leaking 73 runs in nine overs and failing to pick up a wicket. Zimbabwe is in third place in Group C, behind Afghanistan and Pakistan, with one match left.
The ICC U-19 World Cup 2022 kicked out on January 14, and the tournament final will take place on February 5. Zimbabwe has played two matches thus far in the competition, winning one against Papua New Guinea and losing to Pakistan. Victor Chirwa, the team’s bowler, has been barred from bowling in international cricket owing to an unlawful bowling motion, putting the team’s World Cup hopes in jeopardy.
