Kashmir pace sensation Umran Malik has reaped quite a benefit as a result of his head-turner performance during the three matches he featured in his debut Indian Premier League (IPL) season. He has been told to stay back in the UAE after being picked as a net bowler for the Indian team for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Umran Malik, who was roped in by the SunRisers Hyderabad as a replacement for T Natarajan, got to represent the team in three matches and proved that it was enough for him to catch the right eyes. He scalped two wickets in the games and impressed all by bowling the fastest delivery of not just IPL 2021, but in the history of IPL (152.95 kmph) and propelled himself towards his career progression.
He bowled a 150+ kmph delivery in his first game of the tournament. He played an instrumental role in helping the team register a four-run win against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. It was only their third win of the tournament.
Identifying his potential, team India skipper Virat Kohli said that the 21-year old can prove to be a real assets for the team and needs to be nurtured well.
“This tournament throws up talent every year,” Kohli had said at an IPL 2021 presentation. “It’s good to see a guy bowling at 150 clicks. It’s important to understand the progress of individuals from here on, how to maintain your body and how you can get the best out of them. The pool of fast bowlers being strong is always going to be a good thing for Indian cricket. Whenever you see talent like this, obviously you’re going to have your eyes on them and make sure that you maximise their potential.”
Urman Malik has played one T20 and one List A match for Jammu Kashmir so far and has picked a total of four wickets. He clinched three wickets conceding 24 runs for Jammu & Kashmir in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Railways in January earlier this year. His List A appearance came in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Bengal, where he conceded 98 runs from his ten overs for one wicket for his team Jammu and Kashmir.
He was initially selected as a net bowler of the SunRisers Hyderabad team but the blessing came in disguise for him as he made it into the playing XI after Natarajan had to be sidelined.
Meanwhile, Team India, which is placed in n Group 2 of ICC T20 World Cup 2021 alongside New Zealand, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, begin their campaign with a clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24.
