Virat Kohli latest news: Virat Kohli left everyone in a complete state of shock after he stepped down from Test captain on Saturday. He made the announcement on his social media handle after India’s 2-1 defeat in the recent Test series in South Africa. As it stands, Virat Kohli won’t be captaining the Indian Cricket Team in any format.
Former legendary cricketer, Kapil Dev welcomed his decision and urged everyone to understand the reason behind his exit from Test captaincy. He further expressed his support and wished him luck for the future.
“I welcome Virat’s decision to quit the Test captaincy. He was going through a rough time ever since he gave up the T20 captaincy. He has looked tense in recent times, appeared to be under a lot of pressure. So giving up the captaincy was an option in order to play freely. He opted for that,” Kapil told Mid-Day.
“He is a mature man. I am sure he must have thought hard before taking this important decision. Maybe, he wasn’t enjoying the captaincy. We have to support him and wish him luck,” he added.
Kapil Dev also said that Virat Kohli will now have to give up on his ego and play under a young captain in Test Cricket. He also took the reference of his and Sunil Gavaskar while explaining his point.
“Even Sunil Gavaskar played under me. I played under K Srikkanth and Azharuddin. I had no ego. Virat will have to give up his ego and play under a young cricketer. This will help him and Indian cricket. Virat should guide the new captain, new players. We cannot lose Virat, the batsman…no way,” concluded Kapil.
Virat Kohli stepped down as India’s most successful captain in Test Cricket. He captained the Indian Cricket Team in 68 Tests and managed to win 40 out of them.
