India Test skipper Virat Kohli stepped down from the captaincy in Test cricket on Saturday. His decision came after India’s recent Test series defeat (2-1) at the hands of South Africa. Virat Kohli’s decision to step down from Test captaincy took everyone by surprise as he had expressed his desire to continue as India’s captain in the longest format of the game.
Earlier, Virat Kohli had announced that he would step down from T20 captaincy after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
“It’s been seven years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there.”
He went on to add:
“Everything has to come to a halt at some stage, and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief.”
The Board of Control for Cricket in India also congratulated Virat Kohli for his immense contribution as captain for India across formats. Further, the board didn’t forget to mention that Virat Kohli stepped down as the most successful captain in India’s Test cricket history.
“BCCI congratulates Team India captain @imVkohli for his admirable leadership qualities that took the Test team to unprecedented heights. He led India in 68 matches and has been the most successful captain with 40 wins.”
Virat Kohli was appointed as the captain of India in Test Cricket in the middle of a Test series against Australia in 2014 after MS Dhoni stepped down from the role. During his captaincy career, he led India in 68 Tests, winning 40 matches with a win percentage of 58.82.
He is the most successful Indian captain of India and one of the most successful Test skippers in the world. He has also surpassed the likes of Clive Llyod, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh.
