Wasim Jaffer, a former India opener, has praised Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) choice to choose Ravindra Jadeja as their new captain. According to Jaffer, the all-rounder is now at the pinnacle of his abilities and will be confident in leading the team.
CSK surprised everyone on Thursday when they posted an update on their official website indicating that MS Dhoni has opted to give over the franchise captaincy to Jadeja.
During a discussion with ESPNcricinfo, Wasin Jaffer expressed his views on the successor of MS Dhoni, opining that the star all-rounder is the perfect option to take over the role of the captaincy of the team he has been with since 2012. Although Jaffer did admit that he felt the timing of the decision was really surprising.
“Ravindra Jadeja is a very good option as captain at this stage. He is in tremendous form across all three formats plus the fact that he is Indian and knows all the players and conditions well,” said Jaffer.
“The timing was (a bit surprising) as only two days were left for the IPL. But MS Dhoni is known for such surprises. He is a selfless cricketer, who always put the team and franchise above him. I think it is a very good choice. But the good thing is that if something goes wrong, MS Dhoni is there is give his valuable advice.”
The 44-year old further discuss what other options CSK had to fill the role of the captain, stating that other than Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Moeen Ali, and Ruturaj Gaikwad could fit the role. However, according to him, Jadeja is the best fit, something that Dhoni felt himself according to CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan.
“We had discussed earlier that MS Dhoni might be looking to groom a new leader. It could have been Bravo or Moeen Ali. Among young players, Ruturaj Gaikwad was also an option as he has the potential to play for Chennai Super Kings for many years to come. This franchise believes in continuity and backing its players. I think it (Jadeja) is a very good choice.”
Jadeja was among the four players that CSK had retained ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The other three include MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
