Women Big Bash League (WBBL) club Sydney Thunder has appointed former Australia captain Alex Blackwell as their List Manager.
“I am thrilled to get the offer (to manage the Thunder’s WBBL list) and think I fit the role pretty nicely,” Blackwell said on taking up the role.
“It is something I stay across anyway because of the wonderful opportunities I get to commentate on cricket.
“I also keep an eye on all domestic cricket and internationally through my role with FairBreak where I am helping put together all six teams for the FairBreak Invitational – a first of its kind global invitation tournament next year in Hong Kong.”
Alex Blackwell is a veteran of 251 international games across all three formats of the game. Blackwell, who made her debut in 2003, has captained Australia in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in 2010 and was a member of the winning team that won that same title in Sri Lanka in 2012 and 2014. She also has two ICC Women’s World Cup trophies to her name, one in 2005 and another in 2013. The first Australian woman to play 200 games, Blackwell hung her boots from international cricket in 2018.
The former Australian player was also the captain of the Thunder in the inaugural season of WBBL. She currently serves as a broadcaster with Fox Cricket.
CNSW Head of Cricket Greg Mail expressed her delight over Blackwell’s appointment and said, “We couldn’t be happier to have engaged Alex to manage the WBBL playing list at the Thunder.
“Like Lisa (Sthalekar, the Sixers List Manager), her cricket pedigree is obviously outstanding and Alex is an exceptional person who will bring decades of knowledge and experience to the role.
“The fact she watches more cricket than most with her commentary roles and has had the chance to see plenty of talent from around Australia and across the world is a big positive.”
Thunder players contracted for WBBL|07: Samantha Bates, Hannah Darlington, Sammy-Jo Johnson, Anika Learoyd, Phoebe Litchfield, Kate Peterson, Olivia Porter, Lauren Smith, Tahlia Wilson.
