Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the Selection Panel announced the West Indies Squad for T20 World Cup on Thursday. The board has named a 15-member squad that will partake in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE & Oman this year.
Apart from 15 players, the board has also named four players as stand-by for the event. Kieron Pollard will be leading the defending champions for the tournament, while Nicholas Pooran is named as the Vice captain of the squad.
The squad features the likes of the experienced Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle and Lendl Simmons. They were all a part of the side that lifted the T20 World Cup in the previous edition.
“The squad is one with good depth and strength in all departments. There is tremendous T20 experience along with World Cup winning experience which should stand the team in good stead. This squad is made up of many world-beating players who, once knitted into a world-beating team, will be extremely difficult to beat. I expect the team to do very well and with the ‘rub of the green’ I think the team has a good chance of defending the title.” CWI Chief Selector Roger Harper said.
Sunil Narine out; Ravi Rampaul in
Surprisingly, Sunil Narine did not get a cut into the squad despite performing well in the T20 leagues across the globe. He is currently playing in the Caribbean Premier League. 2016 T20 World Cup hero Carlos Braithwaite has also not been selected into the squad.
Pacer Ravi Rampaul also gets a call-up into the squad who was the part of 2012 title lifting team in Sri Lanka.
“Ravi Rampaul is a highly experienced bowler who performed well in the last CG Insurance Super50 Cup and the current Hero CPL to date. He will boost the team’s wicket-taking options in the power-play and the middle phase and will provide another option for the death overs. Roston Chase has shown that he is a very capable T20 player. He performed well in the CPL in 2020 and has been outstanding in the 2021 edition so far. He has shown the ability to knit the innings together while still scoring at a fast rate with a low dot-ball percentage. He‘ll be an excellent foil for the explosive players in the team.” Roger added.
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will take place from October 17 to November 14, 2021.
