WI vs IRE: The match schedule for Ireland’s men’s tour of the West Indies was released today by Cricket West Indies (CWI). Ireland will play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs), followed by a one-off T20 International (T20I) at Sabina Park in Jamaica starting Saturday, January 8 to Sunday, January 16.
Ireland’s tour of the West Indies followed a two-T20I and three-ODI tour of the United States.
The West Indies will be Ireland’s second complete white-ball trip. Ireland previously travelled in 2020, culminating in a stunning one-wicket, last-over victory for the West Indies in the second match of the ODI Series. West Indies won the ODI series 3-0, but Ireland drew the three-match T20I series 1-1, including a stunning four-run triumph in the first T20I of the 2020 series.
The single T20I in the West Indies-Ireland series will almost certainly be Chris Gayle’s final game, with CWI president Ricky Skerritt previously telling Cricbuzz that the West Indies are open to the notion of giving the Jamaican left-hander a farewell game in his homeland.
“We are looking forward to welcoming Ireland back to the West Indies in January. They last visited the Caribbean in 2020 and we had some exciting encounters, so we can anticipate a competitive series to start the new year,” said Johnny Grave, CEO of CWI.
“This will be the start of a very busy year for us at CWI, as we host several international teams as well as the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup. We want to thank the Government of Jamaica and our colleagues at the Jamaica Cricket Association, who have been working closely with us to make sure that the tour can take place safely and smoothly. We’d also like to thank title sponsors CG Insurance for their ongoing support and investment in cricket, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as it has been vital funding to help us to sustain the sport across our Caribbean countries and communities.”
The One-Day International Series between West Indies and Ireland will be West Indies’ fifth of 12 ODI series in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, in which the top seven sides may qualify for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India in 2023.
