The number of COVID-19 cases in Team India on the Sri Lanka tour seems to be mounting up as senior spin specialist Yuzvendra Chahal and spin-bowling allrounder Krishnappa Gowtham have tested positive for the coronavirus.
The two players were among the eight, who were deemed close contacts of all-rounder Krunal Pandya; Pandya tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. Consequently, the second T20I between India and Sri Lanka, which was originally set to be played on July 27, was pushed forward to one day.
Krunal Pandya upon testing positive for the virus was shifted to a separate isolation facility, while the other eight players, including Chahal and Gowtham, remained isolated in the same hotel where the entire Indian squad was staying, though they were separated from them.
Yuzvendra Chahal and K Gowtham tested positive for the virus despite returning a negative test for the RT-PCR test following Pandya’s results. As expected, they would now be shifted to a separate quarantine facility. The remaining six players currently under isolation are Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Chahar, Prithvi Shaw, and Manish Pandey.
As per the Sri Lankan government’s protocols, the ones testing positive for COVID-19 will have to undergo an isolation period of 10 days, while those found to be in close contact with them will have to isolate themselves for seven days. They will have to regularly undergo fresh rounds of RT-PCR tests and will be allowed to leave the country only if they return negative results in consecutive tests.
While the remaining Indian squad will be returning home, having completed the T20I series against Sri Lanka, those under isolation will remain in Colombo until the required time.
Suryakumar Yadav and Prithvi Shaw cleared to fly to England
The duo Suryakumar Yadav and Prithvi Shaw, who are among the close contacts of Krunal Pandya, have been cleared o travel to England for the five-match Test series against England. They will, therefore, not travel back to India but stay in Colombo.
The England series is set to start on August 4.
