County club Northamptonshire on Wednesday confirmed signing Afghanistan all rounder Mohammad Nabi for 2021. The former Afghanistan skipper will join the team as an overseas signing for the upcoming edition of the T20 Blast.
The 35-year-old is currently the world’s number one all-rounder in the shortest format of the game with 294 ratings. He has previously played for Leicestershire in the county cricket and also has a handful of experience of playing in T20 leagues globally.
Northants Steelbacks head coach David Ripley also expressed keen interest on having an international signing of his calibre on the side.
“We’re delighted to welcome such a high profile T20 player as Mohammad Nabi to the club,” Ripley said in an official statement.
“He has a wealth of experience from playing in so many global tournaments around the world and can completely turn a game with both bat and ball,” he added.
Nabi has played a total of 271 T20s till date and scored 4118 runs at an average of 22.62 and also taken 267 wickets including a fifer in the CPL.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing the Vitality Blast in England and it will be exciting to play at Northamptonshire. Hopefully, we can do well,” said Nabi.
Steelbacks’ skipper Josh Cobb also welcomed the all rounder on the side with the expectation of his good performance next year.
“Nabi was our number one target for that role, so Rips [David Ripley] and the club have done a great job to get him,” Cobb said.
