The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) efforts to get cricket on the stage of the Olympics have started coming to fruition as the sport has been enlisted in the list of sports to be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28).
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is set to review the addition of cricket alongside nine other sports that have been taken up as potential contenders for inclusion in the Olympics LA28. Aside from cricket, the sports to be reviewed by IOC include baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kickboxing, squash and motorsport.
The organising committee for LA28 had asked ICC to make their proposal last month. The ICC would be giving a presentation on the same, but a date for it is yet to be decided. The IOC is scheduled to hold a meeting in Mumbai in the second quarter of next year to take a final call on whether cricket succeeds to secure a spot in the mega event.
The IOC has been planning to expand the event and include “potential new sports” to include in the LA28 event. The committee has not stated the exact number of sports they are planning to add to their expansion programme but so far they have given thumbs up to 28 sports for inclusion in the event.
The debut of women’s cricket in the Commonwealth games this year has given a major boost to the ICC’s plans of getting the game into the Olympics. After witnessing the success of the sport in the ongoing Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham, the ICC is quite confident of getting its case accepted for the next Olympics. The sport has been featured for the first time in the event in 24 years.
“We’ve seen from the Commonwealth Games how much the world’s best players have enjoyed playing in front of big crowds and what I’m sure will be large TV audiences,” ICC CEO Geoff Allardice told ESPNcricinfo.
The ICC is expecting massive global support from fans of the event globally and is optimistic about getting the game onboard with LA28. If the expectations of the board come to reality, the sport will mark its entry into the mega sporting event after 128 years. Except for one instance in the 1900 Olympics in a one-off clash between Great Britain and France in Paris, cricket has never been part of the list of sports in the Olympics.
