On this day in 2009, Sachin Tendulkar became the first cricketer to reach the milestone of 17,000 runs in ODI cricket.

He achieved the feat in the knockout between India and Australia, the 5th ODI between the teams during the Australia tour of India at Hyderabad.

Sachin Tendulkar is a name that made generations fall in love with the game of cricket. A player who is considered the “God of Cricket” by Indians, he built a career studded with exceptional records. One of the most remarkable of them being his 17,000 runs benchmark in ODI cricket.

The toss was won by the Australian captain Ricky Ponting who opted to bat first. Marsh and Watson completely justified his decision by giving their inning an explosive start contributing 112 and 93 runs respectively. The fall of the wickets barely affected the batting line-up as the Aussie captain amassed 45 runs

After severing the Sehwag-Tendulkar duo, the Aussies dismissed the remaining wickets like dominoes, keeping the team from reaching the target.

The Kangaroos won by a minuscule margin of 3 runs, a loss for the Indians even battle-scarred Tendulkar’s 175 runs couldn’t prevent. However, his starry inning won him a much deserving Player of the Match award.
