Punjab Kings (PBKS) has chosen not to renew Anil Kumble’s contract. Hence his tenure as Head Coach of the team has come to an end.
A board made up of several owners decided to let Kumble go. It includes Preity Zinta from Bollywood, industrialists Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, and Karan Paul, as well as Kings’ CEO Satish Menon. According to the information obtained, they are searching for a new coach who will be named soon.
In 2020, Kumble joined Kings. They finished in the bottom half of the IPL points table in each of the three seasons he managed the team. Kumble was then the fifth coach the Kings had hired in five seasons.
Kumble was the sole Indian head coach in the IPL in 2020. After his playing career, he worked with three IPL teams. First as a coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore and then for Mumbai Indians. Kings were his third team. This was before he took the position as Head Coach for India for a year in 2016.
But controlling the Kings’ organisation, whether as a captain or a coach, has never been simple. Kumble, for instance, had 42 games on his plate. He drew two ties, won 18, and lost 22 games. Only behind Sunrisers Hyderabad, that is the poorest win-loss ratio for any IPL side since 2020.
One of the original eight IPL teams, Kings (formerly known as Kings XI Punjab) has only twice reached the play-offs. It also included an appearance in the final in 2014.
Despite assembling a well-rounded group at the 2022 auction, the franchise has suffered from constant switching and replacing of captains and coaches. Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow of England, Kagiso Rabada of South Africa, senior Indian hitter Shikar Dhawan, and bowling all-arounder Odean Smith of the West Indies were among the marquee purchases.
Unnamed franchise officials were cited in media reports by Kings as making predictions on Agarwal’s future as captain. According to the information obtained, the incoming head coach will make the final decision.
