Rajasthan Royals registered their first win of the IPL 2020 by defeating the Chennai Super Kings by 16 runs in Sharjah on Tuesday. Skipper Steve Smith and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the batting after CSK won the toss and put them in to bat first.
Royals lost Jaiswal in the third over and from there, Sanju Samson took over and started his fireworks with the bat. He clobbered the CSK bowlers, especially the spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Piyush Chawla all over the park as he scored 74 runs off 32 balls at a strike rate of 231.25.
Steve Smith took over from there and went on to score 69 runs off 47 balls before getting bowled by Sam Curran in the 18.2 overs. CSK bowlers gave away runs like freebies in the first 10 overs but staged a comeback after Lungi Ngidi removed the fiery Samson in the 12th over. After that, Sam Curran cleaned Riyan Parag and Rahul Tewatia and tilted the game towards CSK’s favour.
Rajasthan Royals finished on 216/7 after 20 overs and set a daunting target of 217 runs for the Chennai Super Kings.
Murali Vijay and Shane Watson started the chase Shreyas Gopal and Rahul Tewatia were too good for the openers removing them just after the powerplay.
On one end, CSK kept losing wickets but du Plessis remained calm and didn’t give away his wicket easily. At one point CSK were cruising a 77/4 after 9 overs but from there Kedar Jadhav and started building a partnership. Jadhav and du Plessis combined stitched a partnership of 37 runs before Tom Curran came and added another bruise on CSK’s innings.
Dhoni and du Plessis give late but failed surge
From there skipper MS Dhoni came into bat and started the hunt for the win alongside the already set du Plessis. Du Plessis reached his half-century in the 18th over and scored the majority of the runs with sixes from thereon. Unfortunately, he got out in the final over after blasting 72 off 37 balls including 7 sixes and one boundary. Dhoni carted three consecutive balls for sixes but fell short by 16 runs in the end.
The last over from Ngidi probably caused a huge difference in the game as he conceded 30 runs. Dhoni did take the game close but the runs were par over Dhoni’s bandwidth in the game.
Sanju Samson became the Man of the match as for his marvelous show with the bat and also took two catches behind the wicket.
Rajasthan Royals started off the campaign with a win and will now face Kings XI Punjab on September 27.
