Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Tuesday named leg-spinner Rashid Khan as skipper of the national T20I team. The 22-year-old will now take the position considering the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup event.

The side will also have Najibullah Zadran as the vice-captain of the national team in international cricket, the board stated.

“All-rounder Rashid Khan has been appointed the T20I captain of Team Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Najibullah Zadran has been appointed the National Team’s Vice-captain for the format,” Afghanistan Cricket Board said in a statement.

Rashid has previously served as the captain of the national team in T20Is and ODIs. Moreover, he also replaced Gulbadin Naib as skipper of the Test team after the 2019 World Cup.

“Rashid, one of the well-known global faces of the game, was selected by senior ACB leadership led by ACB Chairman Farhan Yousefzai, for the role considering his experience, brilliant performance as well as leadership skills with the National team over the years.” the board stated.

The No. 2 ranked T20I bowler took to his Twitter account to express his gratitude towards ACB as he tweeted:

“I’m a great believer that a captain is as good as his team. It is Afghanistan that gave me the name RASHID KHAN & it is my duty now to serve my country & my team. Thank you @ACBofficials for the trust & believing in me. It is a dream journey & my fans support will be the key.”

It was after a series loss against West Indies in a one-off Test and ODI series, Rashid was replaced by Asghar Afghan. But now Rashid returns back as a full-time cross-format skipper of the side.
