The Rawalpindi pitch has been given a ‘below-average’ rating for the second time this year. The pitch at the first Test match between Pakistan and England received heavy criticism from cricket pundits as well as the fans.

There was little to no assistance for the bowlers as seven centuries were scored in a single Test. England scored more than 500 runs on the first day of the Test match and, in total, more than 1300 runs were scored across five days.

However, despite that, England did manage to win the Test match by 74 runs, in the end. On day 2 of the Test, PCB chairman, Ramiz Raza labelled the pitch as ‘embarrassing’ and claimed that Pakistan had gone back to the dark ages.

Referee Andy echoes his views on Rawalpindi pitch being ‘below average’

ICC match referee Andy Pycroft echoed similar views and gave the pitch a ‘below average’ rating and a demerit point on Tuesday.

“It was a very flat pitch which gave almost no assistance to any type of bowler,” Pycroft said. “That was the main reason why batters scored very fast and both sides posted huge totals.

“The pitch hardly deteriorated during the course of the match. Since there was very little in it for the bowlers, I found the pitch to be ‘below average’ as per the ICC guidelines.”

The pitch was first criticized during the first Test of the Australia tour of Pakistan in March this year. As many as 1187 runs were scored in that Test and bowlers picked 14 wickets in all.

Rawalpindi has now received demerit points in two successive Tests. The demerit points remain active for a five-year rolling period. If a pitch receives five demerit points, then the venue would be suspended from hosting international cricket matches for a period of five years.

A “below average” rating earns a venue one demerit point, while “poor” and “unfit” ratings earn three and five demerit points, respectively.
