What looked like a one-sided contest eventually ended as a nail biter between England Legends and Indian Legends on Tuesday. Irfan Pathan and Manpreet Goni almost pulled off an improbable victory against England while chasing an improbable total of 188 runs.
After Sachin Tendulkar had won the toss and asked England to bat first, the visitors posted a huge 188-run total in the first innings. English skipper Kevin Pietersen went all guns blazing as he played a sensational knock of 75 runs off 37 balls, a knock which was laced with 6 fours and 5 sixes.
His knock helped England reach 139 runs in 14 overs. However, once he departed, India pulled things back a bit. No other batsman could go past the 30-run mark as the hosts eventually restricted England to 188 in 20 overs.
In reply, India got off to the worst possible start. Indian batsmen disappointed their fans as half of the side went back to the pavilion within 9 overs. English spinner Monty Panesar didn’t bowl a single bad ball until his fourth over and accounted for the wickets of Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Kaif, and Yuvraj Singh to leave India reeling at 56 for 2.
Irfan Pathan then steadied the ship with Yusuf Pathan and Naman Ojha before going for a complete onslaught alongside Manpreet Goni. The duo struck some lusty blows and shared an unbeaten 63-run partnership off just 26 balls. The equation eventually came down to 19 needed off the final over. The duo fell short of 6 runs in the end as England eventually reached home.
Despite the defeat, India is sitting at the top of the points table with three wins in four games. England, on the other hand, has registered two wins in two games and are now sitting at third place on the points table.
