The Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Twenty20 league, SA20, is set to commence at the start of next year. Sunrisers Eastern Cape, a franchise in the league, have recently signed in South African batsman Jordan Hermann as their Wildcard player. The left-handed batter previously went unsold in the auction for SA20 held in September. He had put up a base price of Rs 175,000, however, his signing amount is undisclosed.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, the parent franchise of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, said that the 21-year-old was a recommendation of their coach Adi Birrell, under whom, Hermann played for South Africa Under-19.
This became news a day after Mumbai Indians roped Jofra Archer, an English pacer as their Wildcard for their Cape Town-based subsidiary, MI Emirates in the SA20 league. Chennai Super Kings subsidiary Jo’burg Super Kings, also signed in a South African cricketer as their Wildcard, who is yet to be disclosed.
With only months remaining, the six franchises of SA20 have a deadline of December 30th to sign in their Wildcards, without affecting the $ 2 million budget for players. Each of the teams is allowed to choose a Wildcard for their squad, expanding the permitted strength to 18 players.
CSA is scheduled to launch the SA20 formally on 2nd December in India. A grand launch is planned in Mumbai with a few days’ gaps from the mega launch of the UAE league (ILT20) organized in Mumbai on 30th November. Zee and Viacom, two of the biggest television companies, and broadcasters of both leagues will be involved in both events, where huge announcements are expected to take place.
The two new leagues, SA20 and ILT20 are scheduled to overlap with each other. The South Africa league is to commence from January 10th till February 11th whereas the UAE league, is tentatively scheduled from January 13th to February 12th.
