England’s wicket-keeper batter, Sam Billings has been added to England’s squad for the fifth Test match against India at Edgbaston which starts on July 1. Billings played as a cover for Ben Foakes in the third Test against New Zealand, who tested positive for Covid-19. Foakes complained of back stiffness and was unable to keep wickets on Day 3. Later, he underwent a test that revealed a positive result and he subsequently went into isolation.
Sam Billings will now join the squad but it’s not certain as to whether he will be part of the playing XI. If Ben Foakes recovers in time then he has better chances of playing as a wicket-keeper batter against India. England’s pace spearhead James Anderson didn’t play in the third Test against New Zealand. He will likely make his way into the playing XI for the fifth Test against India.
England is coming into the series after registering a series whitewash against New Zealand. England won the Test series by a 3-0 margin and would be brimming with confidence. On the other hand, India has dealt with a big blow as Rohit Sharma has tested positive for Covid-19. He is currently in isolation and Mayank Agarwal has been added to the Test squad as a cover for Rohit Sharma.
According to reports, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to lead the side if Rohit Sharma misses out on the fifth Test match. It will also be interesting to see the opening pair of the India team for the all-important Test. The eyes would also be on Virat Kohli, who hasn’t been in the best of forms, of late.
