Sam Curran was auctioned off to the Punjab Kings for a whopping 18.5 crore rupees on Friday during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction in Kochi. He broke the record formerly held by Chris Morris as the most expensive player in IPL history. Curran was put up for auction with a starting bid of 2 crore rupees.

Morris, who was acquired by Rajasthan Royals for a then-record Rs 16.25 crore in 2021, became the most expensive player ever signed by an IPL franchise at auction. Yuvraj Singh became the most expensive Indian player in a mini-auction when the Delhi Daredevils paid a total of INR 16 crore to get him in 2015.

Two additional players projected to fetch at least Rs 15 crore each at an IPL mini-auction are Pat Cummins (15.5 in 2020) and Kyle Jamieson (15 in 2021).

As soon as the price of Curran hit Rs 7 crore,  MI and RCB entered the bidding. RCB withdrew from the bidding when RR and MI renewed their previous offers. Following closely behind were the Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Chennai Super Kings.

It was Curran who triumphed in Australia at the T20 World Cup this year.

Curran finished the tournament with 13 wickets, including three for twelve in the final of the championship against Pakistan.

“Happy to have him, he’s good with bat and ball,” Trevor Bayliss of Punjab Kings commented during a break, “Sam could be lucky he came up first.”

Due to a back injury, Curran didn’t participate in the 2022 IPL mega auction.

Since 2020, he has paced for CSK using his left arm. In 2019, the Punjab Kings paid him Rs. 7.2 crore to join their team. Over the course of his three seasons, Curran has a strike rate of 149.78  and has scored 337 runs in 32 games. With an economy rate of 9.21 along with his wicket-taking abilities, Curran is definitely a game changer.
