Shakib Al Hasan has joined the Bangla Tigers as an icon player. He has also been appointed captain of the team. He will play for the fifth season of the Abu Dhabi T10 League. The league is all set to begin in November of this year.
Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Aftab Ahmed was chosen as the team’s head coach. On the other hand, Nazmul Abedin Fahim was designated the assistant coach. Former India fast bowler S Sreesanth has been named as their team’s mentor.
Along with Shakib, more players are expected to join the franchise. It includes Evin Lewis of the West Indies, Colin Munro of New Zealand, Mohammad Amir of Pakistan, Matheesha Pathirana of Sri Lanka, and others.
Shakib previously played in the competition, appearing in five games for Kerala Knights in the first edition. He was recently selected as Bangladesh’s captain for the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. In 367 T20 matches, he scored 5974 runs at a strike rate of 121.59. According to his record, he took 418 wickets and had an economy rate of 6.78.
Sreesanth named coach of Bangla Tigers
This would be Sreesanth’s first coaching position after declaring his retirement from domestic cricket in March of this year.
“It is befitting that Shakib plays for the Bangla Tigers,” the team owner Mohammad Yasin Chowdhury said.
“He is a fantastic ambassador for Bangladesh cricket. From day one we have been keen to include him in the squad but due to the busy schedule of the national team, we were unable to secure him till this season. He is a dynamic, experienced, dedicated, passionate and motivated player as well as an inspirational captain, who will no doubt lead the squad from the front.”
Last season, the Tigers, who were coached by Faf du Plessis, came in third after winning six of their 10 group-stage matches.
