Shikha Pandey has been named in India’s Twenty20 International team for the next tri-series as well as the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa. Pooja Vastrakar has also been included in the squad, but her participation is “subject to fitness.”
Although Pandey hadn’t played for India since their October 2021 tour to Australia, she has earned her spot back with impressive performances in the domestic circuit. In the current five-match T20I series at home against Australia, she made her debut and will be leading a seam assault that also features Renuka Singh, Vastrakar, and rookie left-arm bowler, Anjali Sarvani.
Batter S Meghana, all-rounder Sneh Rana, and seamer Meghna Singh (who played in the T20Is against Australia) will be in the reserves. Meghna failed to take a wicket in either of her two matches against Australia, while also allowing an average of 13.66 runs per over.
However, India’s tri-series squad in South Africa includes all three of its reserve players as the country prepares for the World Cup.
Goa captain Pandey has taken 11 wickets in seven matches at an economy rate of 4.28 in the senior women’s domestic T20 competition. In the inter-zonal T20s, she performed just as well for South Zone, taking five wickets in three games at an economy rate of 4.05 runs per over.
India finished second to Australia in the T20 World Cup competition in 2020, although the Indian cricket team is yet to win their first world championship. They will compete in Group B among teams like England, West Indies, Pakistan, and Ireland. The battle between India and Pakistan will officially get underway on February 12 in Cape Town.
India Women’s team will play against South Africa Women on January 19, in the opening game of the tri-series. The tri-series will be India’s last international fixture ahead of the 2023 T20 World Cup.
