SLC gives Lanka Premier League hosting rights to Pallekelle and Hambantota

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Tuesday announced the hosts for the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League starting in November.

The board has named Pallekelle International Cricket Ground and Mahinda Rajapaksa International Ground as the hosts for the LPL. The tournament will begin from November 21 and it will take place till December 13.

SLC will release the final draft of the players on October 19 and expecting players from different countries taking part in the tournament.

Pallekelle International Stadium has so far hosted 8 Test matches, 26 ODI matches and 23 T20I matches. It has a total capacity of 35,000 spectators although the matches will take place behind closed doors. While the Mahinda Rajapaksa Ground has hosted 21 ODIs and 7 T20I matches so far and has a capacity of 35000 people.

The last time Pallekelle had hosted an international match was between Sri Lanka and West Indies in March this year. While Mahinda Rajapaksa had hosted the last international between Sri Lanka back in 2013.

A total of five teams will compete in the tournament representing the five cities of Sri Lanka namely- Kandy, Colombo, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna.

“The tournament will not only create a platform for local players to develop their skills by playing alongside world-class players but will also provide an opportunity for Sri Lankan cricket fans to watch a quality cricket tournament,” Ravin Wickramaratne, SLC vice-president said.

A pool of 75 foreign players have been shortlisted for the players’ draft who will be available for selection on October 19.
