Stalwart Australian cricketer Sophie Molineux has been announced as the captain of the Victorian cricket team. The announcement comes after Meg Lanning stepped downed from the eminent position. Molineux is an experienced Australian player and will likely lead the Victorian side with an example.
Sophie Molineux is a two-time ICC T-20 World Cup winner and made a significant contribution to the team’s success. Molineux was also in-charge of Melbourne Renegades at the Women’s Big Bash League 2020-21. Under her captaincy, Renegades reached the finals of the championship and stood as the runner-up.
Meg Lanning has stepped down from the leadership of Victoria after eight successful years. She ascended the throne of leadership at the age of 22 years in 2014. Lanning had a successful tenure with the team and she believes that it was the right team to deliver the opportunities provided to her by the state team.
Lanning in her statement said that it has been her honour to serve Victoria and she loves representing her state. She also continued by adding that the Victorian side has some amazing young leaders who are willing to express themselves on the field and she looks forward to playing with them on the field.
Head of Victoria’s female cricket Sharelle McMahon said that Lanning has nurtured and endorsed Molineux as the outstanding successor. Meg’s been amazing for Victoria and the management expects the same from Molineux.
Sophie Molineux too expressed her joy and stated that it is a great opportunity for her. She mentioned that coming from Victoria is a privilege and leading the side is overwhelming. Adding to it she said that captaining Renegades was a stiff challenge and leading Victoria alongside talented players like Lanning and Faltum will be a riveting experience.
Meanwhile, Victoria will kickstart their WNCL 2022 season against South Australia on 23rd September.
