The 2022 edition of the Asia Cup was scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka in the upcoming month of August. However, due to ongoing turmoil in Sri Lanka, the tournament has now been moved to UAE. The BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly confirmed the development on Thursday.

“Asia Cup will be in UAE, as it is the only place where there won’t be rains,” Ganguly told reporters after the Board’s Apex Council meeting.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), had informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) that the board won’t be in a position to host the Asia Cup 2022. Asian Cricket Council (ACC) took the decision after Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) postponed the Lanka Premier League (LPL) due to ongoing crises.

“Sri Lankan cricket has conveyed that due to the existing political and economic situation in their country especially where foreign exchange is concerned it is not an ideal situation for them to host such a mega-event of six teams on the island,” an ACC source said.

“UAE is not the final replacement venue, it could be some other country, even India as the ACC, Sri Lanka cricket will first have to talk with Emirates Cricket Board officials to get final approval for the event,” the official said.

For the unversed, the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup will be held from August 27 to September 11th. Keeping in mind the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022, it has been decided that the Asia Cup will be held in T20 format.

The upcoming Asia Cup will be the 15th edition of the tournament which will begin on August 27. The most anticipated India vs Pakistan game will take place in the tournament.
