The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board approved the procedure to choose the next ICC chairman. A meeting was held at  Birmingham to make a decision on the same. Since Greg Barclay’s term is coming to an end this year, the election will be decided by a simple majority. The Chair’s term will last for two years, from December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2024.

According to the ICC Board, a two-thirds majority is no longer necessary to elect the chairman. Recent proposals state that the winner will be the competitor who receives 51% of the votes. The candidate just requires nine votes from the directors in a 16-member board to be elected.

Sourav Ganguly is rumoured to be one of the leading candidates to become the ICC’s next chair. This will be after Barclay’s term expires since various nations may support him. However, sources with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that “it’s too early” to make any decisions.

Ganguly’s tenure at BCCI depends on Supreme Court’s verdict

The Supreme Court’s decision on the cooling-off period for the BCCI president and secretary will have a significant impact. According to Board sources, Ganguly’s future may rely on the Supreme Court’s decision. The bench presided over by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana is due to hear the case on Thursday.

VVS Laxman, a former player for India, and Daniel Vettori, a former captain of New Zealand, have been named to the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee as current player representatives. Roger Harper of the West Indies has been chosen to serve as the committee’s second previous player representative. He will be joining Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka.

Cambodia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Uzbekistan received associate membership status from the ICC during the meeting. The ICC currently has 108 members in total, including 96 Associates. Cote D’Ivoire is added as Africa’s 21st Member. On the other hand Cambodia and Uzbekistan as the 24th and 25th Members of the Asia area.
