The legendary cricketers MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina stunned the Indian cricketing admirers with their individual retirements on 15th August, India’s 74th Independence Day. Nonetheless Dhoni’s retirement was anticipated to come at any time, but no one predicted Raina to bid adieu as he is just 33 years old.
Currently, the duo is in Chennai for a week-long IPL 2020 preliminary camp. Next to the accomplishment of the camp, the Chennai franchise will leave for UAE, where they will play the 13th edition of the IPL, starting from 19th of September. The concluding match will be played on November 10.
The veteran cricketer followed his captain’s footsteps and quit international cricket. While Dhoni hasn’t revealed the reason behind sudden retirement, Raina opened up about the shock decision. Talking about the retirement on the same date as Dhoni, Raina uncovered that they (Raina and Dhoni) made up their minds to retire on August 15th as their jersey numbers put together to make 73 (Dhoni’s jersey number is 7 and Raina’s jersey number is 3) and India completed 73 years of Independence.
“We had already made up our minds to retire on Saturday (August 15). Dhoni’s jersey number is 7 and mine is 3 – put it together and it makes 73. And on August 15, India completed 73 years of independence, so there couldn’t have been a better day,” Raina told Dainik Jagran.
The pair commenced their international cricket ride nearly at the same time and are still together with the Chennai-based franchise. Chinna Thala went on to add that he and MS Dhoni will continue to play the extravagant league together.
“Dhoni began his career on 23 December 2004 against Bangladesh in Chittagong (now Chattogram), while I made my debut on 30 July 2005 against Sri Lanka in 2005. Both of us almost began together in international cricket, remained together at CSK, and so we now retired together and will continue to play in IPL together.”
However, Suresh Raina declared his retirement on 15th August via the Instagram post. But the next day, he illuminated the BCCI on August 16th that is Sunday, formally as per the code of behaviour. It is understood that Dhoni followed the protocol of notifying the BCCI before proclaiming his retirement at 19:29 hours on August 15.
