The Australian Big Bash League franchise Sydney Thunder has sacked Trevor Griffin as the Head Coach of the Women’s contingent. Griffin’s services were terminated after another humiliating season for the franchise at the Women’s BBL 2022-23. Notably, Griffin had also led the franchise to its maiden title in the 2020-21 edition.

Sydney Thunder Women had a nightmare at the ongoing edition of the Women’s Big Bash League. They managed to register a solitary victory out of the fourteen league games and finished last in the standings. A similar performance was displayed in the previous edition where they finished second-last after the pool stage fixtures.

Addressing the media, the management board of Sydney Thunder stated that the franchise has suffered an encompassing experience in the last two editions and it is now a time to reshape the support staff as well as the incumbent athletes on the side.

Sydney Thunders Women had an incredible BBL campaign during the covid-ridden 2020-21 season where they overpowered Melbourne Stars Women in the final to lift their first trophy. Interestingly, Thunders had an undue advantage of home conditions as the championship was completely hosted in a Sydney-based hub owing to the covid protocol.

Trevor Griffin had an exceptional time with the Sydney Thunder franchise. He saw all the ups and downs since his appointment back in 2019. Griffin was also the first non-Australian coach at the Big Bash League and has always justified his selection.

Griffin’s statement after his sacking

Griffin also released his statement after Thunder’s decision. He stated that it has always been an honour to head the Sydney Thunder franchise and he has truly built an amazing team, friends and memories. Heartfelt Griffin also mentioned that he regrets the results and performance from the past two years and is truly ungrateful for not having an opportunity to continue.

Along with the head coach, Sydney Thunders will also witness a transition in their leadership as incumbent skipper Rachael Haynes has retired from professional cricket. Sydney Thunder will likely make the appointments in the near future.
