Yesterday the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced India’s squad for the upcoming tour of Australia. There were some surprising inclusions as well as some exclusions. The selection committee considered drafting the team on the basis of the performances of some young players in the IPL.
One such beneficiary is Kolkata Knight Rider’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy who has been selected in the T20I squad against Australia.
The spinner has been exceptional in the ongoing season for the KKR, picking at least one wicket in all the games. He also took a five-wicket haul against the Delhi Capitals an helped the side win the game by 59 runs in Abu Dhabi.
KKR lost the last match against the Kings XI Punjab yesterday but Varun Chakravarthy had something else to cheer about. The spinner who has just played one First Class game for Tamil Nadu has been made a cut into the national squad.
“After the match got over I got to know (of my selection into the Indian team). I keep using the same word again and again, it feels surreal,” he told BCCI.tv after the loss against KXIP.
“My basic goal was to play in the team regularly and perform and contribute to their wins. Hopefully I’ll be able to do the same for India. I am not very active on social media and I have to thank the selectors for keeping the faith in me. I don’t really have words.” he added.
Chakravarthy has produced some impressive spells in the ongoing IPL, taking the wicket of the big guns like MS Dhoni, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.
Following his selection, the spinner has been in total surprise as his life has turned around because of the IPL.
