Former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad is dissatisfied with the Indian selectors’ choice to rest out-of-form players rather than bench them. Even prominent players like Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, and Yuvraj Singh got axed from the Indian team. Prasad argued that with so much potential in the nation, the selectors cannot choose players based just on reputation.
The BCCI announced India’s ODI squad last week. Senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have not been playing at their best, will sit out of the series. The 2022 Indian Premier League season wasn’t wonderful for them. The pair also did not contribute to the just-finished series against England.
Venkatesh Prasad criticised the Indian selectors for resting players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on his social media accounts.
He tweeted, “There was a time when you were out of form, you would be dropped irrespective of reputation. Sourav, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Zaheer, and Bhajji all have been dropped when not in form. They have gone back to domestic cricket, scored runs and staged a comeback.”
Venkatesh Prasad went on to say that the criteria for choosing a player had significantly changed from earlier. India has a wealth of skill, therefore players shouldn’t play based solely on reputation, he continued. Venkatesh Prasad also used Anil Kumble as an example in his tweets, who had to sit out on several occasions.
“The yardsticks seem to have changed drastically now, where there is rest for being out of form. This is no way to progress. There is so much talent in the country and cannot play on reputation. One of India’s greatest match-winner, Anil Kumble sat out on so many occasions, need action for the larger good,” Prasad tweeted.
