County Cricket team Gloucestershire on Tuesday re-signed New Zealand batter, Glenn Phillips, for the Vitality T20 Blast 2022 campaign.
Following the 25-year-outstanding old’s tenure with Glos last season, the Club is delighted to welcome Phillips back to Bristol for a second consecutive summer. After hitting 500 runs in just 12 matches in the Vitality Blast last year, Phillips instantly became fans’ favorite at The Shire in 2021. His highest-scoring innings came in a 34-run victory against Glamorgan in Bristol in June.
Speaking about his return to Glos for 2022, Phillips said: “I really enjoyed my time at Glos last year and I am very glad to be returning this season. It’s going to be an exciting year and I can’t wait to get it underway.”
Phillips, a top-order batter-wicketkeeper, has played 35 Twenty20 Internationals for New Zealand since his debut in 2017, scoring a total of 645 runs. In November 2020, against the West Indies, he had his finest performance with the bat for New Zealand, scoring 108 runs off just 51 balls, breaking the record for the fastest century by a New Zealand batsman in a T20I match. Phillips is the fifth-best T20I run-scorer for his country despite just making his debut five years ago. He’s also a proven wicket-taker, having taken 45 wickets in 67 First-Class and Twenty20 innings thus far in his career.
Dale Benkenstein, Head Coach at Gloucestershire Cricket, said: “Glenn is a huge talent and was one of the best players in the Vitality Blast last year, so we’re delighted to have him back again this season. “His addition, with his pedigree and experience, to an already strong white-ball side gives us a great chance of going toe-to-toe with every opposition we come up against.”
Gloucestershire will play seven T20 Vitality Blast matches at home in 2022.
