The Indian team, led by KL Rahul, will depart for Zimbabwe early on Saturday (August 14), with VVS Laxman serving as the team’s head coach and possibly without Washington Sundar. Recently, Sundar (22) had a shoulder injury during a List A game in Manchester, England, and he may be forced to miss the games.

Sundar was scheduled to go from the UK to Harare, but it now appears unlikely given concerns about his health. During Wednesday’s Royal London One-Day match between Lancashire and Worcestershire at Old Trafford, Sundar hurt his left shoulder while diving on the field (August 10).

The Lancashire County Cricket Club, whom he was representing, posted an update on Twitter stating that “@Sundarwashi5 has left the field after receiving treatment on his left shoulder following a heavy landing (sic).” Regarding the player’s fitness level, BCCI and the player were contacted directly. They didn’t respond right away, but a knowledgeable source claimed he is a shaky traveller.

A spokesman for the county said, “We’re awaiting an update. I will let you know as soon as I get it, hopefully later today.”

Rahul Dravid, the team’s normal coach, is away on a two-month tour of England, the West Indies, and the USA. Hence Laxman has been asked to lead the team. In Zimbabwe, India will compete in three One-Day Internationals as part of the ICC Super League.

The 15-person squad, led by Shikhar Dhawan, was expanded at the last minute to include Rahul.

Staff from Laxman’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) oversee the squad. The three ODIs will take place at the Harare Sports Club on August 18, 20, and 22.

Zimbabwe has been in good form lately. “As of late, Zimbabwe has been playing a decent standard of cricket. Playing against a highly ranked team like India, Zimbabwe intends to raise its standards much higher. We all look forward to a short but competitive series,” a Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) official said. Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh in both ODI and Twenty20 International home series. The series concluded on August 10.
