The second edition of the World Test Championship Finals is set to be scheduled in the first week of June. According to the sources, the marquee fixture will likely be hosted from June 7 to June 11 at The Kennington Oval in London. A reserve day will be kept in play in case the rain spoilsports.
Though ICC has not yet officially announced nor confirmed the dates of the final, it is likely that it will be very close to the IPL Final. The BCCI is yet to announce the schedule of IPL 2023 but the championship will likely end by the end of May 28 or in the first week of June.
If India qualifies for the World Test Championship, the players won’t be able to find their comfort zone and tailor their approach from T20 to the test format. Currently, India has a convincing chance to qualify for the final. Given that Pakistan has lost the first test against England, India has got the leverage to lose a test against Australia and still qualify for the final provided they defeat Bangladesh by 2-0.
IPL 2023 to likely coincide with WTC 2023 Finals
The favourable situation for India will inflate the burden of the selection committee as they will have to manage the workload and balance amongst the multi-format players. The addition of two new franchises in IPL will likely stretch the tournament ahead of its normal course of the timeline.
With the India-Australia series concluding on March 22, IPL will likely kickstart from the end of March or the first week of April. Taking into consideration the paramount pressure from relevant stakeholders, it will be interesting to find out BCCI’s decision. The IPL 2023 auctions are scheduled to take place in Kochi on December 23.
